So what did America get out of this election?
Contemporary Realities ...
Thanks to Election Day
Election Day always brings a snapshot of American reality to the table.
We found out we are very decisively divided about how we see proper policy for, and the future of, the American Republic; we found out there are now more "takers" in the electorate than "supporters;" we found out building coalitions from minority interest and ethnic groups remains effective election strategy; and we found out telling the same lies over and over again about your opponent has the desired propagandist effect, for people do believe them if repeated enough.
In short, Chicago-brand politics often win elections. I have long characterized Mr. Obama as a product of Chicago-machine politics and nothing happened that changes my mind. (And, no coincidence, the Chicago machine continues to run our second largest city! Do they do a good job? That is clearly questionable.)
Is a campaign run by machine politicians a pretty sight? No! Nor was our recent election.
Did the GOP make mistakes? Oh, yes! Did Mr. Romney do everything right? Nope.
Should the Republicans have won? They should have, given the economy and the
blundering about of Mr. Obama. But they didn’t. Too many mistakes.
Why? Well, to answer that question, one has to think of all the proper questions first; then one has to answer them carefully and frankly. And that is not easy! We will see if the GOP has enough guts and intelligence to ask the right questions, find the right answers and act on them. The process has begun already.
So what did America get out of this election? More of the same, obviously. We still have divided control of Congress, with a GOP House and a Donkey Senate. And the machine politician remains in the White House.
Don’t expect to see any big problems solved. Expect to experience more anti-business rhetoric and action. Expect to see the percentage of takers increase. Expect humongous deficits to continue. Expect more "pay offs" directed to insider buddies of the White House. Expect the tax burden on business to increase substantially. Expect very slow recovery. Expect very slow job growth.
Expect continued legislative stalemate. (We may not even see any annual budgets actually written ... just like the last four years!) It is a certainty no big problems will be addressed.
But do expect to see some outrageous appointments by the Executive Branch; there will be more cronies of even lower quality than our current attorney general. And expect the First Ladies’ staff size to double (she only has 33 on staff now!)
And pray long and fervently over the Supreme Court nominations to come! That’s where the future of the American Republic will really be compromised. Obama appointments will see the
Constitution as a ball of clay, simply to be molded as they will. And the country will pay and pay.
